Research Interests
Dr. Schumann's research is focused on understanding interactions between civic and state actors from local-to-international perspectives. Since 1997, he has conducted ethnographic research on sustainability sustainable community development in rural areas of Appalachia and Wales. Dr. Schumann served as a policy researcher in the National Assembly for Wales as part of multi-sited research on Welsh devolution in the United Kingdom and Europe. He has also facilitated applied, student-led research projects in southern, central, and northern Appalachia. Author or co-editor of three books and numerous articles, Dr. Schumann's current interests center on comparative studies of sustainability in mountain regions worldwide.
